Is Desktop Linux Right for Me?
The Linux operating system has been around for a quarter century now, should you use it for your desktop computer?
The definitive answer to that question is maybe. It is likely you already use Linux for other things without knowing. Many multi-media boxes, smart TV’s and network routers all use Linux under the hood.
Close cousins of desktop Linux are running your Android phone and possibly that Chromebook that your kids use in school.
Am I special?
Like the world around, you ARE special but maybe not unique when it comes to computers.
Do you use your computer just to bop around Facebook, Twitter and Instagram? If so, then Linux might be a good fit. If you send the occasional email and write a school paper or two then Linux might be a good fit.
Good Fit
Is your computer old but still humming along? Is it running an ancient version of Windows, maybe so old you have no upgrade options? Linux might be a good fit for you too!
Are you a technophile, want to learn to code, develop websites or are just curious, Linux might be a good fit.
Bad Fit
Linux might NOT be a good fit for you if you have to run Windows only software that has been specified by your school or boss.
Most PC games still revolve around Windows so a heavy duty PC gamer isn’t happy with Linux.
Do you live and die by iTunes and whatever Apple dictates, well, Linux might not be a good fit.
If the thought of seeing a logo that didn’t originate in Redmond or Cupertino scares the heck out of you, Linux might not be a good fit.
Summary
The bottom line is that Linux just MIGHT be a good fit and well worth the gentle learning curve involved. Linux can save you some money, keep that older hardware out of the landfill and even eliminate those multi-hour updates.
Next up, WHICH Linux?
