Daily computing
Okay, you’ve decided to take the plunge and give Linux a chance, now what?
What do you want to do?
Using a computer is akin to finding the right tool in your tool box.
If you want to drive a nail you pick up a hammer, if you want to turn
a bolt pick up a wrench. To make a computer useful you have to decide
what you want to do. Some of the most common things that people use
computers for are below, all can be accomplished with Linux!
Internet
Browse the Internet, jump on Instagram, Twitter or FaceBook. Find the latest
and greatest MEME that you need. Google what’s for dinner or if that new
restaurant down the street is open for lunch on Wednesday. In general, you
want a reliable way to run an Internet Browser. If this is your focus, Google
Chrome
or Mozilla Firefox has your
covered. It’s tough to tell you are running
under Linux when you are driving a web browser.
Office Programs
Write an occasional letter or the great American novel. Organize your bills
with a spreadsheet or just keep up on a pile of email newsletters. You might
want to put together a slide show presentation for your friends in the
real world. Check out the LibreOffice
suite of programs, it is bundled with many Linux distributions, it is free
and can even read (and write) files compatible with that unnamed operating
system from Redmond.
Education
Linux has many educational programs for you or the kids to explore the
earth Google Earth or space
Celestra, brush up on math with
TuxMath or just explore
Wikipedia.
